The Diocese of Mount Kilimanjaro welcomes missionaries with all different skills and who want to spend just a few days or a long time in our diocese. Please consider what talents God has given you and I am sure you will find many that would be of use to the people of DMK.

Specific volunteer opportunities would include, but are not limited to:

Religious education and training, diocese-wide, in the seminary and at the parish level.
Formal theological training at the local seminary(Munguishi Bible College).
AIDS education and outreach.
English classes for clergy and seminarians - particularly from the rural areas.
Elementary and primary education, including establishing new schools, curriculum development or just helping out
Church planting, parish development and evangelism.
Medical services and outreach.
Practical educational programs teaching irrigation, farming and ranching.
We cannot possibly imagine a skill or talent that wouldn’t be appreciated and most helpful. Many things we take for granted in the west are lacking and much needed in Kilimanjaro.

Getting here...

Though not a short trip, Kilimanjaro is easily accessible. Daily flight service is now available through KLM airlines via Amsterdam, and twice weekly with Ethiopian Airlines via Frankfurt. Flights from Frankfurt or Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro are approximately 9 hours. Airfare generally runs between $1,000 and $1,500 (USD) per person depending on the time of year. The drive from Kilimanjaro airport into town by the Cathedral, Diocesan offices and the guesthouse is only about 40 minutes. The diocese has access to vehicles to come pick up visitors from the airport.

Staying here...

The Diocese’s beautiful new Guest House opened in May of 2001 and is now fully operational, and available for missionaries to stay in. This facility, built entirely through donations from Christ Church Cathedral in Greenwich, Connecticut, can accommodate up to 13 people very comfortably. There are four apartments with kitchen facilities and full baths.

The weather in Kilimanjaro is temperate, ranging between 50’ - 80’ in the winter (the summer in the northern hemisphere!) and 80’ -90’ in the summer. The long rainy season runs from February through May. Late May - July are excellent times to go as the weather is pleasant and the low-season rates are still in effect.

English is widely spoken. Some knowledge of Swahili will be helpful for those interested in longer stays - especially if one really wants to get to know the local people. Interpreters are always and readily available, even in rural villages and parishes.

Food and other necessities are very inexpensive. A bag of groceries from the local market normally cost us $7 - $8 USD. The local diet is both healthy and mild. Eggs, bread, fruit and porridge are served at breakfast. Lunch and dinner generally consist of rice, a meat or chicken stew, plantain, potatoes, greens and more fruit. There is a good, Western physician (from Ireland) based in Arusha.
